WIAW #11: simple meals

Happy Wednesday! A and I are heading to the beach tomorrow for a few days, so I am busy baking cookies (brown butter choc chip!) and prepping healthy goodies to take on our trip. If you are just popping in, be sure to check out:

- Lately: Long runs, hush puppies, and bikinis.
- My rough training week.
- Fourth of July fun!

Now, onto What I Ate Wednesday. Thank you dear Jenn at Peas & Crayons for hosting. Be sure to check out her blog to learn more about WIAW and link up to other bloggers :) Now, on with my eats!

Breakfast: Protein pancakes via the fitnessista. These pancakes contain protein powder, whole wheat flour, egg whites, and milk. I topped mine with banana and maple syrup with was so yummy. Having protein pancakes feels like a treat, but treats my body like a good meal. Sometimes I add in cocoa powder or peanut butter to the mix, which is also yummy.

Lunch: Post workout, I made a yummy salad with leftover whole wheat pasta salad, greens, cucumber, and bell pepper. I ate this with a juicy peach and a few pretzels.

Snack: After running a million errands to mail birthday gifts, pick up moving stuff, etc. I was starving. I grabbed these new pita crackers at TJ's and had them with almond butter and a greek yogurt.

Dinner: Quiche! A and I whipped up a whole wheat crust, filled the quiche with kale, mushrooms, and goat cheese, and served it with a simple salad and fresh pineapple. I love quiche as a filling but lighter meatless option. I am not sure I love kale as a filling though. It seemed a little strong to me, which is weird because I am OBSESSED with kale. Who knows, maybe I didn't cook it enough. Either way, it was yummy but not my best quiche.

Dessert: A ran to the store and came back with this amazing double chocolate cookie (I love a man who brings back treats). I drank some decaffeinated green tea with it and enjoyed it immensely. Yum.

What sweet thing do you like to end your meal with?

Fourth of July fun!

Happy Fourth of July

I hope everyone had a wonderful time with family, friends, and food. We had an amazing view for the fireworks on a bridge just outside of downtown. It was a fabulous evening :)

Lately

July 8th already! I was so excited for the fourth, and the following weekend just flew by! I had a wonderful weekend of yummy eats, good workouts, and lots of adventures that I cannot wait to share.  Before the holiday, A and I went to Galveston Island for a day trip at the beach to celebrate A's birthday. We packed sandwiches, snacks, and drinks for the day and left early in the morning. After hours and hours in the sand, we hit the shops downtown, and then headed to The Spot for dinner. I've gone to The Spot in the summer my entire life and I was excited to introduce A to their yummy seafood and amazing hush puppies :)

When we got home, A blew out the candles on his birthday banana pudding (his request!) and I was happy for a warm shower to scrub out all that sand. All in all, a very relaxing and sunny celebration!

I had a fabulous Fourth of July and spent Friday afternoon at the art museum. Saturday morning, A and I did our long run for the week - 12 miles. If you remember my training last week, you know how worried I was about this. It was perfect! I'm getting more disciplined about leaving early and fueling during my runs, which is helping immensely. I was happy with the pace, because it felt comfortable. I was hitting where I wanted to be, but I wasn't struggling at all :)

This week my training looks like:
M- yoga class
T- 3 m + strength work
W- 6 m + yoga
Th- 3 m
F- cross train
S- 13 m
S - rest

How are you maintaining outdoor fitness in the July heat?

WIAW #10: Date Night

I almost didn't get this posted on Wednesday. Fail. After a 6 mile pace run, yoga class, and some apartment clean up, I am FINALLY posting what I ate yesterday. Thanks to Jenn for hosting (as always!). If you are just catching up, here is what you missed:

- Yummy & simple apple-oatmeal scones, perfect for this holiday weekend.
- Running with a chipmunk face: how I ran  walked after my oral surgery.
- Friday confessions: a favorite post each week!

But let's get on with some yummy eats!

Breakfast: Oats with chia seeds, protein powder, almond butter, and sliced banana. Coffee with almond milk and cinnamon on the side.

Workout: 3 miles and 40 minutes of strength training.

Lunch: I met up with my amazing friend Laura at a new Mediterranean restaurant. Laura's wedding is in one month, so we had to catch up on everything involving the wedding. We sat at our table for 4 hours and finally realized we needed to go home. Oh the joys of summer relaxation! I ate a grilled chicken pita with lettuce and avocado. I asked for no dressing on it because of the avocado. It was served with a yummy fruit cup!

Snack: I was hungry after our long lunch! I had a small bowl of maple almond granola
with almond milk.

Date Night! Aaron and I were set for a midweek date night. We had purchased a groupon for dance lessons a few weeks ago and had our first lesson ast night. We decided to make an evening of it by dressing up and going out afterwards. Our lessons at Fred Astaire were so much fun! It was nice to try something new and a little challenging.

Dinner: After dance, we went to dinner at a sushi place in Rice Village. I will be honest, I am not a huge sushi fan, but A is, so we go often. I was feeling adventurous, so we sat at the sushi bar and I tried some new things. I had one peice of sushi with egg & eel, one slice of a spicy tuna roll, and a plate of steamed veggies in sesame sauce. Yum!

Snack: A few hours later, I was a little hungry and made a snack. Before bed, I sipped hot coco and had a slice of wheat toast with almond butter. Protein, carbs, and chocolate = a perfect snack!

A day of crazy, but yummy eats!

I'd love to see your WIAW! Please comment below so I can check it out!

Marathon Training - Uh oh!

About a month ago, I started training for my second marathon. I ran my first in January, took about 3 weeks off to get back in a groove, then went back to what I had been doing. By April, I was back at 30-35 miles a week, had done a couple more short races, and was ready to train for my next one! When it comes to training, I am pretty committed to running the plan. I'll wake up at 4am, arrive on a date with wet hair, do double-digits on a treadmill - whatever it takes to get the right run in.

This week was NOT like that at all. I didn't run the plan. In fact, I barely ran at all. I got all four of my impacted wisdom teeth pulled last Monday. I know what you are thinking, "no big deal, Hannah". Sadly, I didn't recover well from the experience: I swelled up like a balloon and kept bleeding from my many stitches. My dentist recommended I didn't run for a bit, especially in the high heat and humidity of Houston (btw, humidity does bad things to swelling in the face).

My face

While I should have been doing 6 mile pace runs, my chipmunk face walked on a treadmill for hours and watched the cooking channel. I ran 3 easy miles on Thursday, walked Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and did light strength training Wednesday-Saturday. It was hard for me to say no, but I did!

On Sunday morning, I attempted my first outdoor run with my stitches, and happily did 9 miles at a 9:30 pace with no problems. Sure, it wasn't my fastest, but I was pleased with the results, considering my training week. Lesson learned? listen to the doctor and you body. All is well, my legs are still under me, and my face is back to normal.

Want to hear the best part of all of this? I actually planned for this week to be a wash. I knew this might happened and planned an extra week into my training, so now I get to repeat this week with no time lost. I've got no doubt that 6 mile pace run will be perfect this time :)

Here is what I am running this week:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 3 m & strength training
Wednesday: 6 m & yoga
Thursday: 3 m & Pilates
Friday: cross-train
Saturday: yoga
Sunday: 12 m
